Pam Bailey grew up in Chicago and began her career as a daily newspaper crime reporter, an experience that shaped her long-standing interest in violence, power, and the institutions that govern both. After years covering emergency rooms and the criminal justice system, she moved into the health-care sector, working inside one of corporate America’s largest multinationals, where she witnessed firsthand the kinds of practices later exposed in No More Tears: The Dark Secrets of Johnson & Johnson (2025).
Leaving corporate life behind, Bailey undertook what she describes as a personal and political reset, spending nearly three years in Gaza as part of a women’s delegation. There, she co-founded We Are Not Numbers, a storytelling project that became a Penguin Random House book in 2025. After returning to the United States, she worked in the nonprofit sector, where an interview with The Wire creator David Simon reignited her focus on crime, punishment, and incarceration. That work led her to co-found More Than Our Crimes.
