"Even after Mamdani, who started with 1% support, defeated former Governor of New York and political heavyweight Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary on a cost-of-living platform, the situation did not change. U.S. President Donald Trump denounced him as "a 100% crazy communist," and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate from New York, did not endorse him either. Cuomo, resentful of the result, ran again as an independent in the general election.
